Disount Code System Update - What Changed?

We just released our new and improved discount code system on HeatSpring.com. The following changes are now in effect:
  1. All courses have 3 discount codes valued at 10%, 15% and 20% off the list price.
  2. Your sales page will now automatically rotate these codes weekly, with a goal of having most students receive the 20% off discount. We do this by showing the 20% off code more frequently.
  3. After requesting a discount code, the student will only have 2 weeks to use it before it expires.
  4. We send reminder emails before discount codes expire to anyone who requested one but has not yet enrolled. We also use this opportunity to ask if they need help enrolling or have questions.
If you want to see or manage your list price, log into your instructor account at www.heatspring.com/admin/dashboard and view the "roadmap" for your course. We have created a dynamic pricing table in your course roadmap which should help clarify the individual pricing, discount levels and earnings specific to your course.

You can view and manage course pricing on the roadmap page for any course for which you have administrative rights. The price that is set here is the list price and is the official price that will be listed on your course sales page before discounts are applied. We will then offer discounts between 0%-20% off the original list price, rotating weekly to balance two goals:
  1. Maximize enrollments in your course.
  2. Target most sales at 20% discount off the list price.
  3. Create a strong call-to-action and perceived scarcity
You may notice that the list price is about 20% higher than the typical sale on your course. This is to compensate for our average 20% discount.

Why did team HeatSpring decide to make these changes?

We have continued to evolve our use of discount codes over the past 10 years and we are excited that these latest changes push us further down that path.

In the previous version of this system we used to create individual codes for each course, denominated in flat dollar amounts. This caused confusion for students and administrative headaches for HeatSpring and our instructors.

We have also noticed that our business operates seasonally and it's surprisingly predictable. Course enrollments ebb and flow in a seasonal pattern with similar trends emerging year after year. With our new discount code system, we can use this information to match discount levels with typical demand patterns. This is done with a goal of increasing revenue while maintaining an target 20% discount off your course's list price.

We can now also be sure that every paid course has valid promoted discount code when it should, and the discount amount as a percentage of the sales price will always match the optimum discount value. Its also much easier for our network of affiliates and publishers to market courses that have a predictable, standardized discount code system.

Specifically designed to benefit our email marketing system

Our automated drip email system is a major driver of enrollments and is responsible for more than 25% of all sales. This is a system which sends out a series of 7 targeted emails helping students enroll after they have requested a discount code, set a reminder for a course, asked a question, taken a feeder short course, or made a variety of other buying actions.

The fact that the new discount codes expire automatically will allow our emails to be even more effective by adding a time-sensitive call to action for prospective students to use their discount codes to enroll in the course.

What about existing codes students have already requested?

All existing codes will still continue to work and will remain at their current value (roughly 20% of list price). If you would like to expire any old discount codes we can do this, otherwise they will expire automatically on 12/31/2016.

Can I still have a custom discount code?

Yes we can still make custom discount codes on request. We can create either a percentage or flat dollar amount code in any amount desired. However these codes will only be available to people who you specifically share them with and will only be valid for your course.

Only the standard 10%, 15%, and  20% off codes will be publicly available through our 'request a discount code' system on you sales page.
